About Optical Air Data Systems

Optical Air Data Systems (OADS), LLC, a small, award-winning high-technology business in Manassas, Virginia, is a world leader in the high power fiber-optic laser business with additional expertise in Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). OADS specializes in rapidly advancing applications of their technology from scientific discovery to hands-on working prototypes.

Our Technology

Our unique fiber-amplified laser technology at the 1550nm and 1064nm wavelengths is substantially more efficient than conventional lasers resulting in lower power consumption, smaller size, and lower weight. We have achieved world record output from our 1064 nm and 1550 nm fiber optic lasers.

Primary Applications

This technology can be adapted to meet many different needs including:

  • Range finders
  • Stand-off wind sensors/profilers
  • Target designators
  • Muzzle velocity indicators
  • Air data sensors
  • LIDAR systems
  • Laser communications
  • Aerosol sensing
  • Laser imaging
Programs
  • LandSafe™

The LandSafe™ aircraft survivability system provides altitude, groundspeed, drift angle, airspeed, true windspeed and direction at speeds down to 0 knots to allow for safe vertical lift aircraft operations in Degraded Visibility Environments – DVE ("brown-out" and "white-out" conditions). Research and development for the LandSafe™ system is ongoing at OADS, meanwhile production of this technology for military aviation applications has been licensed to Rockwell Collins.

  • Vindicator® Laser Wind Sensor

The Vindicator® laser wind sensor (LWS) is a forward-looking LIDAR system capable of measuring real-time three-dimensional wind speed and direction data at varying ranges out to 300 meters. The sensor design is based on state-of-the-art fiber laser technology developed and patented at Optical Air Data Systems. This commercial application has been licensed to Catch the Wind, Inc. for production.
